Wedding veil lengths, in inches and centimeters
Most veil length charts are pictures. This one is a table, so you can read the numbers, search them, and compare them against the dress you already own.
| Length | Where it falls | Standard range | Best with | Best venue | Our veil, and its actual drop |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blusher | Worn forward over the face, ending around the chin or collarbone | 30 in (76 cm) | Any gown: it is a front layer, not a drop length | Traditional and religious ceremonies with an aisle reveal | The Clean Line: 29.5 in (75 cm). The Second Look: 19.5 in (50 cm), a shorter blusher that sits at the collarbone rather than below it. |
| Shoulder | Just past the shoulders, at or above the collarbone at the back | 20–22 in (51–56 cm) | Short dresses, suits, jumpsuits, gowns with a low or detailed back | City hall, courthouse, rooftop, restaurant, rehearsal dinner | The Second Look: 23.5 in (60 cm) on the back layer. |
| Elbow | At the elbow, roughly at the natural waist | 30–36 in (76–91 cm) | Ball gowns and full skirts, where a longer veil would disappear into the skirt | Garden, barn, vineyard, anywhere you'll be moving between spaces | We don't make an elbow length yet. The nearest is The Clean Line at 35.5 in. |
| Fingertip | At the fingertips when your arms are down, around mid-thigh | 38–40 in (97–102 cm) | Slim and column gowns, sheaths, dresses with back buttons or a bow you want visible | Almost anything: this is the most versatile length | The Clean Line: 35.5 in (90 cm), a little under the standard range. |
| Chapel | Pools slightly on the floor, roughly level with a short train | 90 in (229 cm) | Gowns with a modest train the veil should sit level with | Chapels, small churches, shorter aisles | We don't make a chapel length yet. The nearest is The Close Up at 98 in. |
| Cathedral | Extends well past the gown and past most trains | 108–120 in (274–305 cm) | Minimalist satin, crepe, and mikado gowns, and any dress with a train | Churches, estates, ballrooms, museums, long aisles | The Barely There, The Soft Focus and The Heirloom: 110 in (280 cm). The Close Up: 98 in (250 cm), shorter than the standard range. |
The Standard range column is the industry range for that length. The Our veil column is the actual finished drop of each Sovelle style, measured from the comb down. That is the number to plan around. Two of ours sit just outside the standard range, and we would rather show you the real figure than hide it behind the category name.
How to read this table for your dress
The numbers matter less than the two decisions behind them, so start there.
Decision one: how much of the dress do you want visible? A veil covers whatever it falls over. If your gown's back is the reason you bought it (buttons, a low drape, lace placement, a bow), a shorter veil keeps it in the frame. Fingertip is the usual answer here, because it stops above most back detail while still reading clearly as a veil. If the dress is deliberately plain, the opposite logic applies: a cathedral veil gives a clean crepe or satin gown a ceremony moment the dress itself isn't trying to create.
Decision two: how formal is the ceremony, and how far will you walk? Length is architecture. A cathedral veil in a long church aisle photographs as scale; the same veil in a fifteen-foot rooftop ceremony mostly photographs as fabric on the floor. Shorter lengths move with you and need no management. Longer ones need a person to arrange them before every shot, which is fine if you have a photographer and a bridal party, and awkward if you don't.
Where height comes in. The drops above are measured from the comb, not from the ground, so they land differently depending on your height. The Clean Line at 35.5 in (90 cm) sits at the fingertips on someone of average height, a little below them if you are under 5'4", and a little above them if you are over 5'9". Measure it: hold a tape at the crown of your head and let it fall to where you want the veil to end. That number is your length, and you can find it in the table.
One more thing about blusher. Blusher is not a drop length like the others. It is a shorter front layer on a two-tier veil, worn forward over the face and lifted back after the ceremony. That is why our two-tier styles appear in both the blusher row and their own length row. The back layer sets the length, the front layer sets the reveal.
Common questions
What is the most popular wedding veil length?
Fingertip, at 38–40 in (97–102 cm). It is long enough to read as a proper veil in photographs and short enough to move in without help, which is why it works for most ceremonies and most dresses.
Why is your fingertip veil 35.5 in instead of 38–40 in?
Because that is what it measures, and we would rather say so than round it into the category. At 35.5 in (90 cm) The Clean Line lands at the fingertips on someone of average height and just above them if you are tall. If you want a veil that clears the fingertips at any height, measure your own drop with a tape and email us before you order. A custom length is possible, and it is final sale.
Should the veil be longer or shorter than my train?
Either works, as long as it's a decision. A veil that extends past the train reads as more formal and gives the photographer more to work with. A veil that stops level with the train (chapel with a short train, for example) reads as more balanced. What looks unintentional is a veil that ends an inch or two short of the train's edge, so avoid landing right at it.
Can a short dress take a long veil?
Yes, and the contrast is often the point. A shoulder or fingertip veil is the safer pairing with a mini or a suit, but a cathedral veil over a short dress is a deliberate, editorial look. It just has to read as a choice, which usually means keeping everything else (hair, jewelry, shoes) very simple.
Can I have a veil made in a length that isn't on this chart?
Usually, yes. See Custom Veils, or email hello@sovellebridal.com with the drop you want and we'll tell you whether we can make it and what it costs. Custom lengths are made rather than picked from stock, so they do not ship in 3–5 days, and they are final sale and cannot be returned. We'll confirm both in writing before we start.
